Jordan Lake Sudbury School will be hosting an evening with Blake Boles on Tuesday March 16 for a discussion on education alternatives and the college question. A popular perception exists in the alternative education community: that homeschooling, unschooling, free schools, Montessori, and other alternatives are "okay" in the elementary years but "insufficient" in the teenage college preparatory years. Join author and entrepreneur Blake Boles as he explains how providing independent teens with heavy amounts of both freedom and responsibility can lead to powerful college preparation. You'll hear the stories of teens who took the alternative path and got into college--from state universities to small private colleges to the Ivy League--and learn the principles that can equally prepare your teen. Blake will also provide multiple concrete suggestions for how to get teens out of the house and into the community, pursuing fascinating learning projects of their own design.
Blake Boles has worked extensively with teens outside of traditional high school. After a traditional public school upbringing and halfway through an astrophysics major at UC Berkeley, Blake read a John Taylor Gatto book and immediately rearranged his major to exclusively study the wide world of alternative education. He has worked as an outdoor science teacher, snowboarding marketing researcher, chef for groups of 50-100, freelance web designer, and windsurfing and tree climbing instructor. He spends time living in California and Oregon and travels widely. You can visit his website to learn more. This will be a free event, but we would like to suggest a donation of $5 per family which will go toward speaking fees and our tuition assistance fund. No one will be turned away. This event will be at 6pm on Tuesday March 16 at 1200 N Salem St. in Apex.
“.....but how do they get into college?”
